Injury concerns remain as Chelsea face massive game against Napoli

Chelsea’s run of victories continues, but a long list of injuries threatens to derail their resurgence.

Cole Palmer’s absence from the Chelsea squad for the London derby was ultimately a setback that the team managed to overcome thanks to Estevao, Joao Pedro and Enzo Fernandez.

It is a situation Liam Rosenior will want to resolve quickly, as his tenure at Chelsea continues to go from strength to strength, after their first away win in the Premier League since November.

Chelsea travel to the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium on Wednesday as they face Napoli in the Champions League.

The Blues currently sit eighth in the 36-team table, making their trip to Italy is a must-win fixture in order to have any chance of avoiding two extra games in the play-off next month.

With that in mind, here’s the latest Chelsea injury news and potential return dates...

Cole Palmer

Palmer missed Chelsea’s last Champions League clash against Pafos and sat out the victory over Crystal Palace due to an ongoing thigh issue.

It forms part of the effort to manage Palmer’s minutes after he sustained what has been described as a “minor” injury.

Palmer has been struggling with a groin injury throughout this campaign and it was a clear issue at the end of the game with Brentford.

Palmer was originally expected to return for Chelsea’s visit to Selhurst Park, but Rosenior told Sky Sports ahead of the match that Palmer was still suffering with a “niggle”.

He said: "Unfortunately for us, Cole is not quite right for this one. I've said before in press conferences, he want to make sure that every player is at 100%.

"There's no use risking players in January for what we want to achieve. He has got a little niggle.

"He's not quite 100%, but he has got a chance for Wednesday. Hopefully he will be back for then."

Potential return date: January 28 vs Napoli (A)

Tosin Adarabioyo

Tosin Adarabioyo was brought off as a precaution against Brentford, only to be diagnosed with a hamstring injury.

Rosenior has since confirmed the defender will not return until at least the middle of February.

He said: “Tosin won't be available for this game. Unfortunately, he felt something in his hamstring, which is going to rule him out for the next few weeks.

“I can't be any more precise than that at this moment in terms of any timelines.”

Potential return date: February 13 v Hull (A)

Filip Jorgensen

To only add to the injury list, Filip Jorgensen was substituted at half-time against Pafos after being brought in ahead of Robert Sanchez.

The good news is the injury is not as bad a first feared with Rosenior remaininh positive about the status of the goalkeeper when speaking to reporters on Friday.

He said: “Jorgensen had his scan, which is actually quite positive and not as bad as we feared. He won't be available for Palace, but could be potentially for Napoli.”

Potential return date: January 28 v Napoli (A)

Dario Essugo

Chelsea’s latest injury came after Dario Luis Essugo slipped during training, as announced by Rosenior on Friday.

He said: “Dario has picked up a really unfortunate injury. He slipped in training, and he’s going to be out for a while.

“We expect him to be out for over a month, which is a real shame because he’s an outstanding player.”

Romeo Lavia

Romeo Lavia has been out since suffering a thigh injury in November.

The midfielder is back in light training but is not yet back in first-team training and Rosenior has not put a timescale on his return.

On Friday, Rosenior said: “Romeo is on the way back, which is great because he’s a very good, outstanding player at a very high level.

“I want him back as quickly as possible, of course, but I want him back with no more injuries. We don’t want to force him, we want him back where he can get into a flow of repetitive game time.”

Potential return date: February 21 vs Burnley (H)

Levi Colwill

Levi Colwill is continuing his recovery from the serious knee injury he suffered in pre-season.
