Triple injury boost cannot soften the pain of another domestic cup final defeat

Chelsea will hope to end a disappointing season strongly, starting with a massive London derby against Tottenham on Tuesday night.

As such, the Blues’ chances of qualifying for Europe are slim.

Having said that, Champions League football is not completely out of the question for Chelsea, but they will need a favour from Aston Villa and for results elsewhere to go in their favour.

Not to mention they must win their remaining league games against Tottenham and Sunderland - a feat they have not managed since the start of March - so it would appear unlikely if not impossible.

On a more positive note, Robert Sanchez returned from injury to start the cup final, while Pedro Neto and Alejandro Garnacho came on in the second half to prove their fitness ahead of the Spurs showdown.

Estevao

Estevao tweaked his hamstring while through in the 1-0 loss to Manchester United. He has since been ruled out for the remainder of the season and he will also miss this summer’s World Cup.

There is some positive news though, Standard Sport understands that Estevao and Chelsea have come to an agreement over his recovery programme and that there is no plan for the Brazilian to undergo surgery any time soon.

In a new update, McFarlane said: “I’m sure those conversations are going on, in terms of how long his recovery is going to be.

“We know that he’s not going to be fit for us from now until the rest of the season.

“Estevao is a top player, a top talent, really good to work with. But, right now, our focus is on the next three games, and we’ll do whatever we can to help Estevao with his recovery.”

Jamie Gittens

Jamie Gittens suffered a hamstring injury during a rare start for Chelsea at home to West Ham on January 31.

The winger initially ruled out for around six weeks, with a return to action against Newcastle on March 17 pencilled in until he suffered a setback in his recovery.

The 21-year-old is yet to resume full training and former head coach Liam Rosenior raised doubts as to whether the former Borussia Dortmund forward will play again this season.

“I can't give you a definitive answer on that,” Rosenior said. “Jamie actually has responded really well to his last setback, but I don't want to put pressure on him.

“We need to make sure he's right in the long term.”

Jesse Derry

The 3-1 loss to Nottingham Forest was somewhat overshadowed by head injuries sustained by Sanchez and youngster Jesse Derry - on his full Premier League debut - causing both players to be substituted over the course of the game.

Derry was stretchered off in first half stoppage time after a nasty collision with Forest’s Zach Abbott and, thankfully, the teenager is fine after being rushed to hospital.

Derry will not feature in any of Chelsea’s remaining Premier League games, with his season coming to a premature end.
