Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo captained Ecuador to a famous 2-1 comeback win over four-time champions Germany at the 2026 World Cup.
The 24-year-old Chelsea holding midfielder produced another sublime performance, which will come as no surprise to the Stamford Bridge faithful.
Caicedo, who has emerged as one of the best in the world in his position since joining the Blues three years ago, won five out of 11 duels and two out of four tackles.
He played one key pass, created one big chance, and completed 56 of 63 passes, proving his mettle once again on the world stage.
Ecuador have now advanced to the round of 32, which might frustrate Chelsea fans who want him back home and resting for the new season.
Despite playing as a holding midfielder, Caicedo has played eight key passes and created two big chances at the World Cup.
Up against Felix Nmecha and Aleksandar Pavlovic, he made both players look ordinary.
His performance will particularly impress his new manager at Chelsea, Xabi Alonso. The Spaniard, a number six himself, places huge importance on midfield.
Finding the right midfield partner for Caicedo is arguably Chelsea’s biggest priority this summer, with Enzo Fernandez now poised to leave London.
His expected departure would leave a huge creative and tactical void, placing even greater emphasis on recruiting the right profile to play alongside the Ecuadorian.
Xabi Alonso’s midfield has always thrived on balance, and that means signing more than just another ball-winner.
Chelsea need a number six who can carry the ball through pressure and dictate the tempo with intelligent distribution.
The incoming partner must provide composure in possession while allowing Caicedo to hunt, recover and dominate defensively.
The Blues already have one of the world’s finest destroyers in midfield. Now they must find the perfect controller and progressive carrier to partner with him.
