Substitutes make all the difference for below-par Blues in Carabao Cup quarter-final
Chelsea survived a lacklustre performance as they reached the Carabao Cup semi-finals with a 3-1 win at Cardiff.
The Blues took the lead in the second half when Facundo Buonanotte raced through and tapped sideways for Alejandro Garnacho to convert low into the bottom corner.
Cardiff roared back thanks to a magnificent equalising header by David Turnbull, only for Chelsea to win the game through Pedro Neto’s deflected strike and Garnacho’s second in stoppage time.
Standard Sport’s Dom Smith was at the Cardiff City Stadium to rate the Chelsea players’ performances…
Filip Jorgensen 7
Made one outstanding save in the first half. Collected crosses confidently. Nothing he could do about Cardiff’s brilliant equaliser.
Josh Acheampong 6
Caught out once or twice but went into every challenge with conviction and had a couple of impressive runs.
Tosin Adarabioyo 5
Did well to knock on a couple of corner deliveries at risk of being too short. Defensively OK.
Benoit Badiashile 5
Made one horrendous pass but was otherwise composed, without ever being properly tested.
Jorrel Hato 5
Ran the left channel well, but took a while to get into the game on his first appearance since Qarabag.
Andrey Santos 6
Pretty anonymous for large parts of the game. The Brazilian needed to do more to link the play, but did assist the Neto goal.
Moises Caicedo 6
Kept the ball moving swiftly for Chelsea as he captained the team. Booked for sarcastically clapping referee Tony Harrington after Chelsea gave away a foul.
Tyrique George 5
Did very little in the first half at right wing. Was taken off at the break.
Facundo Buonanotte 7
One of Chelsea’s best players on a difficult night and a rare outing for him. Won the ball with plenty of interceptions and assisted Garnacho’s first goal before being replaced.
Jamie Gittens 4
His opportunities to run at defenders would invariably end with being dispossessed. Frustrating evening for him.
Marc Guiu 6
Held the ball up well and dropped in to receive, too. Forced a save before being taken off at half-time.
Joao Pedro (Guiu, 46’) 5
Involved in the winning goal but quite isolated up front when he came on. Missed a good chance in injury time.
Alejandro Garnacho (George 46’) 8
Scored the opening goal with a composed finish from a reasonably tight angle. Pressed high. Burst away in stoppage time and fired in Chelsea’s third and his second with confidence. Man of the match.
Pedro Neto (Gittens, 66’) 7
Came on and made an impact, scoring Chelsea’s second goal and running at Cardiff.
Malo Gusto (Buonanotte, 66’) 5
Should have got closer to scorer Turnbull for the Cardiff goal.
Trevoh Chalobah (Acheampong, 84’) N/A
Not used: Sanchez, Fernandez, James, Fofana.
