Chelsea have completed the signing of Republic of Ireland captain Katie McCabe following the expiration of her Arsenal contract.

The 30-year-old left-back will officially join the Blues on July 1 after ending an 11-year association with Arsenal Women, where she established herself as one of the Women’s Super League’s most influential and recognisable players.

McCabe has signed a deal running until June 2029, with Chelsea holding the option of a further year.

The move sees one of Arsenal’s most decorated modern players swap north London for west London after making 305 appearances for the Gunners and becoming a firm favourite among supporters thanks to her leadership, versatility and fierce competitive streak.

McCabe admitted the decision to leave Arsenal and begin a new challenge was one she felt ready to make.

“It’s a new chapter in my career,” she said.

“This is something that I feel I’m ready for right now.

“I’m really excited to get going and show the Chelsea fans how ready I am to perform for the badge.

“I’m so looking forward to walking out at Stamford Bridge as a home player, being around the fan base and competing for trophies on all fronts.

“This club has been successful for so many years. I want to keep pushing and driving that, and for me, it’s about bringing that success back to Chelsea.”

Born in Kilnamanagh, Dublin, McCabe first made her name with Raheny United, winning multiple league titles and domestic cups before attracting interest from England.

She joined Arsenal in 2015 and quickly became a key figure at the club. After helping the Gunners win the Women’s FA Cup in her first season, she gained further experience during a loan spell at Glasgow City before returning to establish herself as one of the WSL’s premier full-backs.

During her time in north London, McCabe won a Women’s Super League title in 2019 and played a key role in Arsenal’s Women’s Champions League triumph in 2025.

Her impact stretched far beyond silverware. Voted Arsenal’s Player of the Season in both 2021 and 2023, she became synonymous with the club’s rise back to the top of the domestic and European game.

Internationally, McCabe has been equally influential.

She became Ireland’s youngest-ever captain at the age of 21 and has gone on to earn more than 100 caps for her country while scoring 34 goals.

One of the defining moments of her career came at the 2023 Women’s World Cup when she captained Ireland at their first-ever appearance at the tournament and scored the nation’s first World Cup goal with a spectacular effort direct from a corner against Canada.

Later that year, McCabe became the first Irish woman to be nominated for the Ballon d’Or and the first Irish footballer to feature on the shortlist since Roy Keane in 2000.

Chelsea believe they have secured one of the most experienced and accomplished players in the women’s game.

Capable of operating at left-back, wing-back, further forward or in midfield, McCabe brings proven quality, elite leadership and a winning mentality to Sonia Bompastor’s squad as the Blues continue to strengthen ahead of the new campaign.

For Chelsea, it represents a major statement signing. For Arsenal supporters, it marks the end of an era.
