Marc Cucurella’s left wing showing was worth of praise – but Chelsea need to make sure they don’t need him there again.

Cerys Jones’ piece for the Athletic this morning was all about Marc Cucurella and his performance for the Blues against Liverpool at the weekend.
With all of our left wing options our injured or otherwise unavailable, the Spaniard valiantly took up the last of being out outlet down that side and did really well. It was a handy solution, but not one we want to see regularly.
As Jones points out, that position has to be a priority in the summer. But it’s not just about signing better wingers than the ones they already have – it’s about signing players who, like Cucurella, can stay fit through the physical challenges of a Premier League season, and can also step up to help the team out in multiple positions when needed.
“This summer, they need to focus on creating a more robust and adaptable squad — not a larger one,” she wrote.
Too right. The problem is not a lack of left wingers – quite the opposition. It’s a lack of available, and quality left wingers.
The Chelsea manager shortlist has been pretty clear for a while now, but talk of a 6th candidate had us curious this morning.
Calum McFarlane has to pick his back line for Saturday, and we’d suspect that the Liverpool result has answered a few questions for him already.
