Blues seek to bounce back from Tottenham defeat in Hong Kong

Chelsea continue their pre-season preparations today with a high-profile friendly against Juventus. The Blues’ summer tour of Australia and Asia has moved on to Hong Kong, where they meet Serie A giants at the impressive Kai Tak Sports Park in a game that kicks off at 12:30pm BST in the UK. Xabi Alonso will be eager for his side to bounce back quickly from Saturday’s last-gasp 2-1 loss to 10-man rivals Tottenham, having kicked off their trip with a thrilling 6-4 victory over Western Sydney Wanderers.

Chelsea have seen their options significantly bolstered by six new arrivals including new signing Danny Welbeck and the returning Mykhailo Mudryk, plus the addition of set-piece coach Austin MacPhee. However, Jordan Henderson remains on holiday following the World Cup and will have his wrist injury assessed before joining training. Juventus have yet to concede a goal during their pre-season campaign so far, drawing with FC Basel before routine wins over Standard Liege and Nice.

Jeremie Boga out to haunt former club Chelsea

As mentioned, Jeremie Boga starts against his former club for Juventus today.

The French-born Ivorian winger joined Chelsea as a youngster in 2009 and made one solitary senior appearance for the club, sent for loan spells at Rennes, Granada and Birmingham before heading to Italy with Sassuolo for £3.5m in 2018.

He also played for Atalanta before joining Juventus from French club Nice earlier this year on an initial loan deal that has since been converted into a permanent transfer.

Boga’s only appearance for then champions Chelsea came in a shock start at home against Burnley on the opening day of the 2017/18 Premier League campaign, when he was substituted after just 18 minutes following an early red card for Gary Cahill in a game that the Blues - then managed by Antonio Conte - lost 3-2.

Chelsea must improve after last-gasp Tottenham defeat

Saturday’s last-gasp 2-1 loss to Tottenham in Sydney was a tough one to take for Chelsea, despite it only being a pre-season friendly.

The fit-again Estevao had hit back quickly for the Blues in the first game against their London rivals ever to take place outside of the UK, after £100m man Sandro Tonali had struck early for Spurs.

Kevin Danso was sent off soon after coming on to boost Chelsea’s chances, only for the 10 men to then prevail in unlikely fashion thanks to Richarlison’s stoppage-time effort.

Asked where his side needed to improve after losing to Tottenham, and after shipping four goals to Western Sydney Wanderers in their tour opener last week, Xabi Alonso said on Tuesday: “Yeah, we are in the middle of the pre-season, I would say.

“It's three weeks since we started, three weeks to go, more or less.

“So we take every game, we analyse it, the things that we have worked, we have done right, what we can improve, and from the Spurs game, we have analysed it, and from tomorrow as well.

“We know that Juve is a great team, with great experienced players, with a great coach, so it's going to be a great, interesting and useful test for us.”

An early look at Kai Tak Sports Park in Hong Kong, the impressive 49,975-capacity stadium that only opened last year and has a retractable roof.

North London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham played here in a friendly last summer, while Liverpool also met AC Milan.

Chelsea will be back in blue today after wearing black against Tottenham, while Juventus are showcasing their pink away jerseys.

Alonso issues update on Sanchez and Henderson injuries

Chelsea should also be boosted today by the return of Robert Sanchez.

The Blues’ first-choice goalkeeper was a surprise absentee from Saturday’s squad to face Tottenham in Sydney, having suffered what Xabi Alonso described as a “minor injury”.

Teddy Sharman-Lowe started in goal instead against Spurs, backed up by youngster Ted Curd.

However, Chelsea’s options in goal are now looking stronger with Sanchez likely to be fit again and both Mike Penders and Gabriel Slonina joining the squad.

Asked for an update on the fitness of Sanchez and new signing Jordan Henderson, Alonso said on Tuesday: “Yeah, with Jordan, we expect that he can start training with all the rest of the players that were involved in the semis of the World Cup.

“We have a few of them involved, so we are looking forward to welcoming them.

“And Jordan, we need to assess because of the injury he had, how long it would take to be fit to compete, because he can train, but we need to be aware of the situation.
