The Blues completed a 22-game unbeaten league campaign with a 1-0 victory over Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon. Aggie Beever-Jones netted the winning goal in second half injury-time.
When speaking to the media after the match, Chelsea boss Bompastor emphasised the significance of the team’s unbeaten season.
“Before the game, we were all on the same page; we wanted to play the last game at home with the support of our fans and make sure we just stayed unbeaten,” Bompastor said. “It means a lot because it was tough again, but we managed to score in the last minutes of the game with Aggie [Beever-Jones].
“We knew we had to keep the right mentality going into every single game until the end. I would say the second part of the season has been more difficult for us because we were probably not as dominant as we would like to be, but when you reflect again, we played so many games without all of the squad and some big players were missing; not having LJ [Lauren James] and not having Mayra Ramírez for the last games. It’s difficult sometimes to perform at your best in every game.
“I think, for me, it’s a great achievement because we were able to be consistent and stay unbeaten. In this league, it means a lot because it is really competitive and to be able to achieve that, it’s for me, more than the title.
“For the club to be able to win six titles in a row means we have been consistent. Every year, the club has managed to win trophies, but maybe the fact that this year we were unbeaten makes it even more special because it never happened before.”
Commenting further on the long-term injuries, Bompastor acknowledged the team’s strength-in-depth, particularly in overcoming the absence of those key players.
She stated “It just shows that the club is going in the right direction in terms of having enough players to play in every competition. I was hoping for some of the players to be back and for me to be able to manage them in some games. It just shows how great this squad is and how much talent we have without having some big players available.”
Discussing the difficulties that her side faced as the season went on, Bompastor explained the challenge of juggling both club and international commitments.
She said “I think you could see in the first part of the season, I think our performances were better. The second part of the season is so much more difficult because players go on international duty and they just come back one or two days before the game, so you don’t have time to work with them. You play every three days, so it’s about making sure they rest to have fresh legs going into the next game.”
Chelsea end the campaign with 60 points after recording 19 wins and three draws from their 22 league games.
