Rayan Cherki scored France's goal in their 2-1 loss to Ivory Coast as part of their preparations for the 2026 World Cup.

The 22-year-old, fresh off a sparkling first season for City in which he scored 10 times and provided 15 assists, was in fine form for Didier Deschamps’ side in Nantes.

Just before half-time, he controlled the ball on the edge of the box and manoeuvred between two defenders before firing a fantastic low shot inside the far post.

It didn’t prove to be enough to get the win, with Ivory Coast overturning the scores through full-back Guela Doue and Amad Diallo in the second period.

Cherki was withdrawn in the 78th minute having been Les Bleus’ star man, completing 65 passes.

France will now face Northern Ireland in Lille on Monday 8 June for their last warm up fixture before flying to North America for their World Cup opener against Senegal in New York on Tuesday 16 June.

Meanwhile, Rodri was not involved in Spain’s 1-1 draw with Iraq at the Riazor Stadium in A Coruna.

Their next and final match before the World Cup will see them face Peru in Puebla, Mexico on Tuesday 9 June. Their Group H campaign will then get under way against Cabo Verde on Monday 15 June.
