Birmingham City's away form is becoming a major problem in their bid to reach the Premier League.

Birmingham City have been told they must address their dismal away form if they are to sustain a push for promotion from the Championship this season.

After a record-breaking League One campaign last time out, there was a lot of excitement about Chris Davies’ side, particularly as the boss was once again backed in the transfer market.

However, as we approach the halfway mark, it’s fair to say that Blues have been inconsistent, with the team currently sitting mid-table, even if they are only five points away from the play-offs.

Birmingham City’s away form is becoming a serious problem

Of course, after 21 games, there will be trends emerging, and it’s clear Birmingham have a major problem in that they aren’t picking up enough points away from home.

To their credit, Blues are a formidable outfit at St. Andrew’s, even if the 1-1 draw against Charlton Athletic last time out was hugely frustrating.

Yet, 21 points from ten games on their own patch is an excellent return, and with Davies’ men losing just once at home, it shows they have made their ground a fortress.

Sadly for Birmingham, they are not replicating that form on their travels, as they’ve managed just eight points from 11 games, losing seven times in the process.

Clearly, that’s not good enough for a team that is looking to go up, and when quizzed by FLW about their away day woes, Birmingham fan pundit Jason Moore made it clear it is holding them back from challenging for promotion.

It’s as simple as, if we don’t improve our away form, we will not go up, and we won’t even get the play-offs. Our away form is relegation form, never mind a push for promotion," Jason told FLW.

So, it has to pick up and it’s my biggest concern at the moment, and Davies needs to figure it out, because it’s shocking.

"We’ve lost seven games out of 11, and we’ve conceded the first goal nine times - that’s awful! So, yes, it’s a real concern, and how can you be so good at home and then so bad away? I just don’t get it. It’s the same XI he puts out.

Our next away game is Sheffield United, and I’m not confident, I think we’ll get beat comfortably. How can it be so different? Davies needs to figure it out.

"I can take losing, but it’s the way we lose. You’ve got fans spending all that money and travelling all that distance for the performances we’re putting in. It’s nothing short of disgraceful.”

Chris Davies must make Birmingham City changes to solve away day struggles

At this stage of the season, this is a pattern that must worry Birmingham, and Davies needs to take responsibility.

That’s because it’s not just the results, because when you watch the team play, they look like a different team in the way they get about the opposition and control games.

Obviously, the fans do make a difference, as St. Andrew’s can generate a great atmosphere, but it shouldn’t have such an impact on the way the team plays.

Whether it’s a tactical tweak, or a personnel issue, Davies must do something to make Blues a more difficult team to beat on the road, as seven defeats in 11 is totally unacceptable given the quality in the squad, and it is what’s holding them back right now.

As well as that, when you aren’t getting results away, it puts even more pressure on Birmingham to keep winning games at home, and, as we saw on Saturday, that’s not guaranteed.
