A couple of Blues could be on their way out of the club before the 7pm deadline on Monday.

Chris Davies has told midfield duo Alfie Change and George Hall that they will have to leave Birmingham City this summer if they want to play regular football this season.

The vast number of high-quality additions that Blues have made in this window have pushed many members of last season's League One record-breakers down the food chain at St Andrew's.

Alfie May is a prime example. After being one of the club's top scorers last season, he departed the club earlier in the summer in pursuit of a consistent first XI spot somewhere else. That other place ended up being Huddersfield Town.

For those Birmingham alumni who weren't even involved in last season's campaign, there is no realistic prospect of them getting any meaningful game time this season.

Alfie Chang and George Hall expected to leave Birmingham City in coming days

Chang and Hall both played for Walsall during temporary spells away from City in the previous term. The former was only there from February until the end of the season, while the latter joined the Saddlers in the summer but struggled with injuries throughout. They only made 19 league appearances between them for the fourth tier side.

Birmingham will not be the place that will allow them to get back to playing consistently again, according to the club's boss. "With Alfie and George, if they want to get regular game time they would have to go elsewhere," said Davies, via Birmingham Live.

"They know that, I think that’s pretty obvious, and they are looking at their options and what’s out there. Potentially in the next few days something will happen for them.

"Both are top professionals. I haven’t had one single cross word with either of them, they have been absolutely exemplary every single day.

"Both of them are a credit and good players. They just need the right club. The way they have been training, whoever that club is that decides to go for them is going to make a good decision because they’ve both looked strong and fit.

"They can play at a good level, no doubt, so I am hopeful for them that the right thing emerges."

Birmingham's vast improvement was always going to hurt their fringe players

The club's immense rise in levels and ambitions in recent seasons was always going to have a negative knock-on effect for the likes of Chang and Hall, two academy graduates who showed signs of promise at times but, ultimately, aren't up to the level that Blues want to get to.

Both players have less than a year left on their current deals. Birmingham only have until Monday at 7pm to confirm any new incoming or outgoing transfers.

If they can get fees for the two midfielders, it would be considered a great bit of business. It wouldn't make a world of difference to their Profit and Sustainability standings, but it'd be a light help, nonetheless.
