New Arsenal signing Christian Nørgaard has acknowledged the intense competition for places this season, but remains confident in his ability to contribute.
The Danish international joined the Gunners in early July for £15 million, arriving from Brentford following the departures of Thomas Partey and Jorginho. The 31-year-old is expected to challenge for a role in defensive midfield, though Martin Zubimendi is tipped to be the first-choice option in that position.
Speaking to Arsenal.com, Nørgaard admitted he is under no illusions about the challenge ahead.
“I’m realistic, of course. I know this is a step up in terms of quality, size of the club. But I’m also here to contribute, otherwise I wouldn’t have made the move. But I also know that there are some of the best players in the world in my position here, so it will be competitive.
“There’s the things you see on the weekend on the pitch, but there’s a lot of other things going on around the football team, and I hope I can really help this team both on and off the pitch.
“There’s a lot of competition, but for me, it was a chance to represent Arsenal at the age of 31. I was coming to a later stage in my career and I signed a new deal with Brentford. But when the interest came from Arsenal and after my first talks with Mikel, it was very clear to me that I would do everything to be able to play here.”

Alongside Zubimendi, Nørgaard will compete with Declan Rice and Myles Lewis-Skelly for minutes in midfield. While Lewis-Skelly is currently featuring at left-back, a permanent return to midfield is expected in the near future.
Despite the strong depth, Nørgaard is likely to feature regularly as Arsenal compete across multiple competitions.
Speaking ahead of the Newcastle friendly, Nørgaard reflected positively on his first weeks at the club:
“I’ve been able to be with the team from day one of pre-season and it’s benefited me a lot. I’m much further down the line now in terms of the integration of play than I would have been if I joined now. So it’s been fantastic so far. It’s such a good group, such a good group of staff and the whole team around has made everything very easy.”
Nørgaard brings valuable top-flight experience and calm defensive presence to Mikel Arteta’s side. While Zubimendi is expected to start, the Dane’s contribution could prove vital as the Gunners aim for their first major trophy in five years.
Anything to add Gooners?
