Manchester City are delighted to confirm a key appointment to Andrée Jeglertz’s first-team coaching set-up with Anders Bengtsson arriving as assistant coach.
The Swede arrived at the Club during preseason and will continue to work closely with our head coach and fellow staff Nicky Ajose and Diego Restrepo.
Bengtsson has a wealth of precious experience in elite level football as both a player and a coach having represented Djurgarden in the Swedish top-flight Allsvensken during his playing days.
Following retirement, he completed military service as a group commander between 1989 and 1990 before working in secondary and high schools as a PE teacher while studying at the School of Sports Sciences between 1994 and 1997 in his homeland.
After building an impressive portfolio which saw him organise a football high school programme and work within coaching educations in Stockholm and with the Sweden Football Institute, he gained his first professional football coaching opportunity in 2007 with Hammarby Women.
Following a productive two-year spell at the Swedish outfit, he was appointed as Djurgarden Under-19s head coach before making the step up to Under-21s between 2009 and 2013 while also working as a coach for Tyreso FF’s girls’ team.
Bengtsson then joined the Swedish FA after four yours at Djurgarden to help rebuild his nation’s coaching programme and he stayed at the organisation for 10 years holding various roles.
This included assistant coach for the Under-21s and Under-20s men's national team, then between 2021 and 2022 he held the same position for the Women Under-19s where he helped them reach the U19 European Championship semi-final.
In the summer of 2022 he was then appointed as the head coach of the Sweden Women U18-U19 before joining City ahead of the 2025/26 Barclays Women’s Super League season.
Everyone at the Club wishes Anders all the very best during his time at the Joie Stadium.
