Clash between fans breaks out near Vila Belmiro after Corinthians match

The match between Corinthians and Bahia, valid for the first round of the Brazilian Championship, ended with reports of confusion off the pitch. After the final whistle of the duel held at Vila Belmiro, in Santos, there was an outbreak of confrontation involving Corinthians fans and members of Santos’ organized supporters near the stadium.

The incident was initially reported by journalist Pedro Ramiro, who investigated the movement around the Torcida Jovem’s branch. According to the information gathered, the Military Police were quickly called in to contain the groups and prevent the situation from escalating.

To disperse those involved, officers used stun grenades, as well as pepper spray and tear gas. Some fans felt unwell during the action, but there were no reports of injuries or serious incidents.

The Torcida Jovem branch is located about 100 meters from Vila Belmiro. Although the surrounding area had been cordoned off with metal barriers as a preventive measure, the presence of rival fans in the area ended up contributing to the start of the turmoil.

Another preventive action taken by the authorities was the isolation of the statue of Zito, a historic Santos idol. The monument, located outside the stadium near gate 6, was fenced off to prevent possible acts of vandalism.

Corinthians played at Vila Belmiro as the home team due to a change in the match location. Initially scheduled for Neo Química Arena, the black-and-white debut in the Brasileirão was moved after an agreement between Santos, the São Paulo Football Federation (FPF), and the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF).

The change aimed to give Timão a longer rest period before the Supercopa do Brasil final against Flamengo, scheduled for Sunday (01), at 4pm (Brasília time), at Estádio Mané Garrincha, in Brasília.

In addition, Corinthians could not play in the São Paulo capital on the 28th, as São Paulo and Flamengo faced each other on the same date. The Military Police generally do not authorize two major matches in the city simultaneously, and CBF regulations also prevent clubs from hosting matches outside their states. Given this scenario, Vila Belmiro was chosen as an alternative.

The agreement between Corinthians and Santos also involved a recent compensation: the Santos club hosted the match against Red Bull Bragantino, for the fifth round of the Paulista Championship, at Neo Química Arena. According to Meu Timão, there were no reports of property damage or significant vandalism around the stadium after the match.
