Claudio 'Piojo' López has been appointed CF Benidorm’s new vice-president of sport. According to Superdeporte, the club confirmed the move on Thursday as the season closed and planning for the next campaign began.
The former Argentina forward fills the vacancy left by David Villa, who departed months ago due to other professional commitments. The change forms part of a wider restructure aimed at consolidating the project’s growth and strengthening every area.
López steps up after working with the club since DV7 Group began managing CF Benidorm. He now joins the board to add his experience across football operations, with a focus on improving the first team and the academy.
He said he believes strongly in the project, urged supporters to stay with them and keep backing the team, and added that he thinks very good things are coming for Benidorm.
López played at the 1998 and 2002 World Cups with Argentina and won silver at Atlanta 96. His club career spanned Spain, Italy, Mexico and the United States.
After retiring, he worked as head coach of Colorado Rapids and is a shareholder and executive at DV7 Group. Benidorm have also appointed Víctor Oñate as chief executive.
Oñate was marketing director at Valencia CF and the European Grand Prix, is Villa’s agent and co-founded DV7 Group.
