San Diego have turned down an offer from West Brom for left-back Luca Bombino.
West Brom have had an offer rejected by San Diego for left-back Luca Bombino as they look to strengthen Ryan Mason’s squad ahead of the new season.
The Baggies have had a busy window so far, with Nat Phillips, George Campbell and Aune Heggebo having all joined the Championship side.
But, Albion are still looking to strengthen in other areas, and it appears a left-back is on their radar.
That’s after journalist Ben Jacobs revealed that Albion had made an offer for Bombino, although that was turned down by the MLS outfit, as it was ‘deemed well below’ their valuation.
It’s not said what the asking price is, but West Brom clearly have a lot of work to do if they are to reach an agreement for the 19-year-old, who has represented USA at youth level.
Bombino is currently on loan at San Diego from LAFC, but they have an option to make the move permanent, which they are set to trigger after the season ends.
The three signings that Albion have made so far have been for the here and now, and the arrival of Campbell shows that the recruitment team at The Hawthorns are looking across the globe for ways to strengthen the team.
With Bombino, he is a player who would be signed with the long-term in mind.
He has only played 19 MLS games in his career, and even though he has impressed a lot, it would be a big step up for him to become a regular for a Championship side that will want to challenge for promotion.
Nevertheless, it’s clear he has plenty of talent, and, given his age, he is someone that could become an important player for Albion in the next decade and beyond.
So, it would be a potentially exciting signing for West Brom if they could pull it off, and his attacking instincts from full-back are what Mason wants from those in that position.
Of course, every player has a price, and Albion won’t overpay to bring Bombino in, so it will be interesting to see if they return with another offer for the teenager.
But, you would expect further discussion to take place in the background, and Albion fans will hope that they are chasing more than just Bombino, as whilst you shouldn’t read too much into pre-season results, the defeats to Blackpool and Lincoln show that the squad is lacking in key areas.
