FC Bayern celebrated a spectacular comeback in Mainz, but the 4-3 win over FSV not only brought the late turnaround into focus, but also a historic Bundesliga record.
After trailing 3-0 at the break, there was initially little to suggest Bayern would have a successful afternoon. The Munich side found few solutions in attack for a long time before Nicolas Jackson scored the record champions‘ first goal shortly after the break. It was not only the equalizer in a wild game, but also a special moment for the statistics books: Bayern became the first team in Bundesliga history to break the 50 away goals in a season mark.
In doing so, FCB surpassed a record that had also previously been set in Munich. Bayern had scored 49 away goals in the 2021/22 season, compared to 47 in 2019/20. The club had already set a record at the time in the 2013/14 season with 46 goals in away stadiums. Now the next record has been set: after the performance in Mainz, Bayern have scored 53 away goals in the current Bundesliga season.

The record-breaking evening only developed after the break. After Jackson’s goal, Michael Olise, Jamal Musiala and Harry Kane increased the pressure on the Mainz defence. Olise brought Munich back into the game with a precise finish, Musiala later made it 3:3 before Kane scored the 4:3 winner in the closing stages.
In addition to the goal record, Bayern also extended their strong comeback record. For the eighth time this Bundesliga season, the record champions won a game in which they had previously fallen behind. Only Bayer Leverkusen had previously achieved this in the 1999/2000 season. Back then, the Werkself collected a total of 29 points after trailing, while Bayern already have 25 in the current season.
For FCB, the success in Mainz was remarkable in several respects. Vincent Kompany’s team not only avoided a setback in an away game after a weak first half, but also wrote Bundesliga history at the same time. Offensive power in foreign stadiums in particular remains a key feature of this season.
