As expected, FC Barcelona have officially announced the contract renewal of defender Andreas Christensen until the summer of 2028.
The 30-year-old’s previous contract stood to expire on 30 June, and after prolonged negotiations, an agreement was reached last month over an extension.
Now, Christensen has signed his contract, committing to the club for two more seasons until the summer of 2028.
“FC Barcelona and Andreas Christensen have reached an agreement for the extension of the Danish defender’s contract, keeping him at the Club until 30 June 2028,” the club statement read.
“The centre-back adds another two seasons to his deal and the Club and the player will make the agreement official in the near future at the Club offices.”
Christensen has been at Barcelona for four years now, having arrived as a free agent in the summer of 2022 after his contract at Chelsea expired.
The 30-year-old defender was a key part of the La Liga title-winning squad in his debut season under Xavi Hernandez, but since then, the defender has been unable to play regularly due to regular injury problems.
Christensen missed the entire second half of the last season due to a partial ACL tear sustained in December, which led to major question marks over his future.
But, Barcelona president Joan Laporta was committed to not leaving the defender hanging in a difficult situation and manager Hansi Flick, too, has great faith in the Dane and his abilities.
As such, the La Liga champions went forward with a two-year contract extension for Christensen until 2028.
While the club statement does not mention it, the new deal contains an option for both Christensen and Barcelona to terminate the contract after one year in 2027.
