Confirmed: Julian Brandt to leave Borussia Dortmund this summer

Borussia Dortmund managing director for sport Lars Ricken has confirmed Julian Brandt will leave as a free agent this summer when his contract expires.

The decision follows months of talks and was made public after Dortmund’s 2-1 win over 1. FC Köln on Saturday.

"The situation is that there were open discussions, and in the end we agreed that the expiring contract will not be extended," Ricken told Sky Germany.

Brandt has made 297 appearances for BVB since 2019, scoring 56 goals and supplying 68 assists.

"I think we can only feel gratitude towards him. He played for us for seven years and was sometimes viewed critically. He will turn 30 in a few weeks, and we can orient ourselves a bit differently, so in that sense it can also be an opportunity for both sides."
