Conor Townsend is undergoing a medical at West Bromwich Albion ahead of a return to The Hawthorns on a free transfer.

ExpressAndStar.com reports that the 33-year-old is poised to sign a one-year deal following his release by Ipswich this summer, after they sealed a Premier League return.

Townsend left Albion in 2024 after six years and more than 200 appearances. Ipswich paid £750,000 for him and he featured 10 times across two seasons, the first in the Premier League.

Last season was disrupted by an ACL injury sustained in a pre-season friendly. He turns 34 this season.

He is well known to head coach James Morrison, a coach for most of Townsend’s previous Albion stint, and they were briefly team-mates in 2018.

Albion see his experience and knowhow bolstering a youthful dressing room, and providing left-back cover for Callum Styles. Styles, the Hungary international and double player of the season last term, missed only one league match and there is currently no senior cover.

Charlie Taylor filled the role on loan from Southampton last season. Townsend would be the fifth summer recruit after forward pair Jimmy-Jay Morgan and Barney Stewart, defender Carter Pinnington and goalkeeper Matt Ingram.
