After FC Bayern’s 4-0 win against Club Brugge in the Champions League, Manuel Neuer once again showed that he is not only in top form in sporting terms, but also rhetorically. When asked about his future, the 39-year-old responded with a twinkle in his eye – and hinted that his decision will probably not be made until the winter.
Neuer put in his usual commanding performance between the posts in Munich’s thumping victory, their twelfth win in twelve competitive matches. After the match, the Bayern captain was asked about his contract situation – and dribbled his way out of the affair with humour: „You’ll have to ask my bones,“ said the 2014 world champion and laughed. When asked what they would say, he replied mischievously: „There are good days and better days.“
Behind the scenes, however, the captain’s future already appears to be more concrete than Neuer’s reticence would suggest. According to consistent media reports, the signs are clearly pointing to an extension. Both the goalkeeper and the club can well imagine extending his contract, which runs until the summer of 2026, by a further year until 2027.

SPORT1 reports that initial contact has already been made between the club management and Neuer’s advisors. According to BILD, further talks are planned for the winter break. A final decision on the goalkeeper’s future could therefore be made by the end of the year.
According to the Süddeutsche Zeitung, Neuer enjoys great freedom of choice in this matter. This means that the captain can effectively decide for himself whether to extend his contract with the record champions. The club has full confidence in its long-serving goalkeeper – even after his protracted leg injury last year.
The Bayern bosses know the value of the veteran – both on a sporting and personal level. An extension would not only be a sign of trust, but also a signal of continuity and stability in a phase in which the club has regained its former strength.
