Corinthians end first 2026 Brasileirão round in bottom half

The first round of the 2026 Brazilian Championship concluded on the night of this Thursday (29th). Defeated by Bahia last Wednesday (28th), Corinthians started the competition in a position close to the relegation zone.

The 2-1 defeat at Vila Belmiro, combined with the other results of the round, placed Timão in 14th position, still without any points. The team led by Dorival Júnior stands alongside Vasco da Gama and Cruzeiro, who were also defeated in their debuts, against Mirassol and Botafogo, respectively.

Even without scoring, Corinthians is ahead of six other teams due to tiebreaker criteria. With a goal difference similar to some of the competitors, the fewer number of red and yellow cards has been decisive for their position in the table.

On the other hand, nine clubs won in the opening round. The main highlight was Botafogo, who thrashed Cruzeiro 4-0 and finished at the top of the championship. Palmeiras and Atlético Mineiro, who drew 2-2, were the only teams to share points in the debut.

It is worth noting that Corinthians will play the third round of the Brasileirão before the second, due to the Supercopa do Brasil and the final stretch of the first phase of the Campeonato Paulista. The next commitment for the national tournament will be on February 12th, at 8 PM, when Timão hosts Red Bull Bragantino at the Neo Química Arena.

Before that, the alvinegro club takes the field in search of the first title of the season. On Sunday (1st), at 4 PM (Brasília time), Corinthians faces Flamengo at the Mané Garrincha Stadium in Brasília, for the Supercopa do Brasil.
