Corinthians supporters taunted Paraguay on social media after their 4-1 defeat to the United States in Friday’s 2026 World Cup opener, linking the result to the omission of club idol Ángel Romero. According to Meu Timao, posts surged soon after full-time.
Many argued Paraguay were paying the price for leaving Romero out, while others joked that a Corinthians curse had taken effect.
Romero made Paraguay’s provisional list but was omitted from the final 26. After the announcement, he lamented missing out, stressed respect for the coaching staff’s decision, and said he felt proud to have represented the country for more than a decade.
His most recent call-up came in the September FIFA window, when he was still at Corinthians, featuring against Ecuador and Peru in World Cup qualifying. Now with Boca Juniors, he has played 13 matches and scored once in 2026.
Paraguay sealed their place on matchday 17 with a 0-0 draw against Ecuador that secured sixth place, ending a 16-year absence from the tournament.
