Corinthians player called up to the Brazil American football team

The kicker Emerson Martins, a standout player for the Corinthians Steamrollers, has been called up to defend the Brazilian American Football Team. The call-up for the Brazil Onças — the name by which the national team is known — was announced last Friday.

The athlete is part of a list of 45 players selected by coach Brian Guzman for a training period that will take place between December 9 and 14, in Itapecerica da Serra (SP). The training camp, dubbed “Onças Week,” will bring together the country's top talents in the sport.

Among the specialists, Emerson will share his position with Adriano de Castro, a player in the Under-20 category who plays for Guilford College in the United States. Both are expected to perform as kickers and punters. In total, the call-up includes six Under-20 athletes.

Considered one of the best kickers in the country, Emerson is coming off a historic season. He broke his own national field goal record twice: first, by converting a 62-yard kick against Cruzeiro in the Superliga; then, by reaching 64 yards against Vasco Almirantes, setting the new best mark in Brazilian American football.

The Corinthians Steamrollers, meanwhile, are undergoing a restructuring process after failing to advance past the first phase in both the São Paulo Championship (SPFL) and the National Superliga.
