Corinthians have been punished for racist abuse directed at Palmeiras goalkeeper Carlos Miguel during Sunday’s 0-0 derby at Neo Química Arena, receiving a R$ 80,000 fine and the loss of one home match.

According to Nosso Palestra, the case was deemed the most serious among those reviewed, underlining the need for firm action against racism in Brazilian football.

On the pitch, Corinthians finished with two players sent off. In the subsequent judgment, André was banned for one match for obscene gestures, Matheuzinho received a four-game suspension for punching Flaco López, and Hugo Souza was handed two games.

Breno Bidon and goalkeeping coach Luiz Fernando were acquitted.

There were further financial penalties. Corinthians were fined R$ 10,000 after a drone appeared over Neo Química Arena, while a tunnel fracas resulted in R$ 20,000 fines for both Corinthians and Palmeiras.

After moving top of their Libertadores group, Palmeiras face Athletico Paranaense at Allianz Parque on Sunday 19 at 18:30, Brasília time.
