Corinthians advanced past Portuguesa at Canindé in the Paulistão quarter-finals, with goalkeeper Hugo Souza and substitute Vitinho pivotal in a penalty shootout success.
According to Globo.com, Hugo conceded a first-half penalty on Renê but atoned with the save, then Portuguesa went ahead soon after amid defensive errors. Centre-back André Ramalho could not clear his header and midfielder Raniele was involved in the move that led to the goal.
Dorival Júnior replaced Raniele with Garro at half-time, seeking control, but the change did not shift the pattern. Further changes followed 20 minutes into the second half, with Vitinho, Pedro Raul and Dieguinho introduced, and Vitinho later levelled from Matheuzinho’s fine pass to force penalties.
In the shootout, Hugo saved two spot-kicks to decide the tie. Garro missed Corinthians’ first attempt, but Matheuzinho, Gustavo Henrique, Allan, André, Kayke, Pedro Raul, Vitinho and André Ramalho all converted.
Memphis Depay had another quiet outing, failing to finish a clear chance after Gui Negão’s pass and making way in the second half. Breno Bidon impressed on his return from injury, while Matheus Bidu, in his eighth straight game, created a big opening that Pedro Raul squandered. Allan struggled in midfield yet scored from the spot, and Matheuzinho’s late assist capped a steady display.
