On Tuesday, 31 March, 62 years since the start of Brazil's military regime, which lasted until 1985, Corinthians used social media to reaffirm democratic values and restate its opposition to the dictatorship.

The club said 31 March marks one of Brazil's saddest pages, and underlined the importance of democracy, dialogue and respect for institutions and differences.

The club played a central role in Democracia Corinthiana, led by Sócrates and team-mates, turning idols into national symbols on and off the pitch.

The movement began in 1982 and continued until 1984, amid a weakening dictatorship. During that time the squad embraced political engagement within football, with figures such as Sócrates, Wladimir, Casagrande, Biro-Biro, Zé Maria and Zenon defending Brazilians' rights in a climate of censorship and repression.

Inside the club it functioned as a practical example of democracy. All employees, regardless of role, had an equal say in internal political and sporting decisions.

Beyond the pitch, members joined the Diretas Já rally and backed the Dante de Oliveira Constitutional Amendment for the return of direct presidential elections.

The movement ended after the 1984 season with Waldemar Pires leaving the presidency. Sócrates then signed for Fiorentina, while Casagrande also moved on.

Democracia Corinthiana remains recognised worldwide as a symbol of resistance, and has featured in documentaries, including Democracia em Preto e Branco, carried by FIFA's official website.

Its legacy endures in tributes across football, exemplified by the Prêmio Sócrates, created in 2022 and presented alongside the Ballon d'Or to honour leading social initiatives.
