Could a strange decision by Manchester United play into Manchester City’s hands?

There doesn’t seem to be many players at Manchester United who look like they are capable of playing for a club managed by Pep Guardiola. If you were to draw up a list of players that would make it at Manchester City from United, it wouldn’t be an extensive list. One player who would likely make the list is talented young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo. Mainoo burst onto the scene in midfield for United with a string of impressive performances. But since Ruben Amorim became City manager, Mainoo has spent the majority of his time on the periphery of Manchester United’s first team. That seems a strange decision based on Mainoo’s obvious talent and potential.

Now, a new report indicates that Manchester City has an interest in signing Kobbie Mainoo from United. Perhaps one of the stranger decisions by Ruben Amorim could play into Manchester City’s hands. That remains to be seen. But it is obvious why City would have its eye on adding Kobbie Mainoo to Pep Guardiola’s squad.

Manchester City, alongside Chelsea and Newcastle, are reportedly interested in signing Kobbie Mainoo.

Fraser Fletcher has reported for TeamTalk that Manchester City, alongside Chelsea and Newcastle United, are interested in signing Kobbie Mainoo from Manchester United. Furthermore, Fletcher reports that Pep Guardiola regards Mainoo as one of the brightest prospects in English football. Fletcher also reported that City’s reported interest in Mainoo makes the situation surrounding Mainoo’s future worth watching. Fraser Fletcher also reports that United hasn’t set an asking price to sell Kobbie Mainoo. Lastly, Fletcher reports that the uncertainty surrounding Mainoo’s current situation means a January move for the midfielder hasn’tbeen ruled out.

Kobbie Mainoo moving from United to Manchester City seems highly unlikely.

It seems unlikely that Manchester United would sell Kobbie Mainoo to Manchester City. A player will rarely move between the two local rivals. But as a player, Mainoo could slot into Pep Guardiola’s squad. He has the necessary technical ability and untapped potential to slot into Manchester City’s squad. Before Ruben Amorim became United’s manager, Mainoo looked to be a player who could be the future of United’s and possibly England’s midfield. Mainoo is a player who reads the game well and can get forward. He is far from the finished product as a player. But his obvious talent and potential are clear to see.

Do I believe Manchester City has any chance of signing Kobbie Mainoo from Manchester United? No, I don’t. I’m also not interested in why Mainoo hasn’t been a first-team regular at United under Ruben Amorim. But it is strange that a player once regarded as of the brightest midfield prospects in England could be available for a club to buy. Money talks in football. Perhaps if City offered a transfer fee that was too good to refuse to sign Mainoo from their arch-rivals it may tempt them to part ways with Mainoo. But even that seems highly unlikely. But it is amusing to ponder the possibility if nothing else.
