Could Iran’s World Cup 2026 place be at risk? FIFA respond

FIFA said Iran’s World Cup 2026 status is under review as security concerns grow while the focus remains on safe tournament for all teams.

FIFA responds to Iran concerns

The FIFA confirmed that the situation surrounding Iran will remain under close monitoring ahead of FIFA World Cup.

Uncertainty has increased following the ongoing conflict involving Iran raising questions about the team’s participation in the tournament which will be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico in the summer of 2026.

FIFA: “Everyone will be Safe”

Speaking during FIFA’s annual general assembly in Wales, FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafstrom addressed the issue.

In comments reported by ESPN, Grafstrom said FIFA is aware of the latest developments but stressed that it is too early to make detailed statements.

He confirmed that meetings have already taken place and that FIFA is following global events closely.

Grafstrom added that the World Cup draw was held in Washington with all qualified teams included and that FIFA’s main priority is to deliver safe World Cup with all teams present.

He also said FIFA will continue its regular communication with the three host governments to ensure security for everyone involved.

No decision yet, but alternatives possible

So far, there has been no official announcement about Iran withdrawing or being excluded from the tournament. However with the World Cup set to begin in around three months, FIFA is expected to prepare contingency plans in case the situation changes.

According to FIFA regulations, if a team withdraws before the start of the World Cup, it can be replaced.

The replacement is usually chosen based on qualification rankings and in most cases, FIFA looks first to teams from the same confederation although the final decision rests with FIFA.

Group and match schedule

Iran were drawn in Group G, alongside Egypt, Belgium and New Zealand.

Under the current schedule, Iran are set to open their campaign against New Zealand, then face Belgium before closing the group stage against Egypt in second half of June 2026.

Two of Iran’s matches are planned to be played in Los Angeles while the game against Egypt is scheduled for 26 June in Seattle.
