A federal court in São Paulo has overturned an order to deliver the Taça das Bolinhas to São Paulo, after an appeal by Flamengo.
The club said in a statement that the 12th Federal Civil Court in São Paulo revoked the handover and rejected São Paulo’s request. It added that it remains confident of the definitive recognition of its rights to the trophy.
The court also ruled that jurisdiction over the trophy’s destination lies with the Federal Court in Rio de Janeiro. The Taça therefore remains on deposit with Caixa Econômica Federal.
The Taça das Bolinhas has been disputed by Flamengo and São Paulo for years. In 1975 the Confederação Brasileira de Futebol, then the Confederação Brasileira de Desportos, ruled the trophy would go to the first club to win three titles in a row or five non-consecutive in the Campeonato Brasileiro.
Flamengo believes it met the five-title requirement with the 1992 Brasileirão, but the dispute centres on 1987. The CBF recognised Flamengo as 1987 champions in 2011, but a 2018 Supreme Federal Court (STF) ruling made Sport the sole champions. On that basis São Paulo would be the first five-time champions after their 2007 Brasileirão title.
