The frontman has come into form at the right time after being linked with a move away this month
It is funny how quickly things can change in football, and Brandon Thomas-Asante’s rise to prominence over the past week at Coventry City is testament to that.
Rumours had started to circulate regarding the forward’s future with the Sky Blues heading into the January transfer window, with the forward struggling in front of goal and netting just three times since his summer move from West Bromwich Albion.
But after finding the back of the net in each of his last two outings, the former Salford City man has done his chances of remaining in the Midlands the world of good, with boss Frank Lampard seemingly keen to keep him at the club past the February 3 transfer deadline.
That will be a hammer blow to both Stoke City and Blackburn Rovers, who were both credited with interest in the 26-year-old as the pair look to add to their own attacking options.
While Thomas-Asante will never be a player who is described as lacking in effort, the forward has failed to make the goalscoring impact he would have liked at Cov after making the move from the Hawthorns six months ago.
The striker only had one league goal to his name before the start of last week, with a solitary strike against Blackburn Rovers to his name back in October, as well as two further goals in cup competitions.
But with Lampard facing an injury crisis in the forward department of late - with both Haji Wright and Ephron Mason-Clark unfit for selection - Thomas-Asante has risen to the occasion, with his goals proving pivotal in earning back-to-back victories in the second tier.
A rifled effort proved to be the only goal of the game in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Bristol City, while a poachers’ effort sealed a 2-0 success against Blackburn in midweek, and thus proving just how clinical he can be when allowed to cause havoc through the middle, rather than out on the flanks.
Manager Lampard spoke of how crucial his striker is to his plans of late, and his latest showings are only going to cement his status as a key cog in the Cov machine of late, leaving any transfer rumours firmly quashed.
"He's our player and remains so," he told the BBC earlier this month.
"We get linked with a lot of players, half of which I know is nonsense. The rumour mill and what actually happens are two different things.
"At the minute, it doesn't mean anything to me other than we know we're missing three very important players so we have to get every ounce out of the squad we've got. If we can improve it we'll try and do that."
Rovers’ pain will have been two-fold in midweek, as not only did they taste defeat on their own turf, but they also saw their chances of signing the Coventry striker go up in smoke.
Thomas-Asante has played himself right back into contention at the CBS Arena with his latest showings, and any links to Rovers or Stoke will likely fizzle out, especially with the absentees Lampard [pictured] still has to deal with.
While Haji Wright looks set to return to action before too long, Mason-Clark looks set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after picking up an injury against Plymouth Argyle on Boxing Day, leaving every attacking option that is fit and firing more crucial than ever to the Sky Blues.
Instead, Rovers look to have turned their attention back to forward Augustus Kargbo - according to TuttoMercatoWeb - after being linked with the forward back in the summer, while all and sundry have been linked with a move to the bet365 Stadium.
After losing Leicester City loanee Tom Cannon, the Potters have been linked with Liverpool’s Jayden Danns, Bristol City forward Fally Mayulu, as well as Ipswich Town frontman Ali Al-Hamadi, as Mark Robins looks to bolster his attacking options for the second-half of the season.
Whether the former Cov boss may have had some sway when trying to bring Thomas-Asante to Staffordshire looks to be irrelevant right now, with the forward playing himself into form and looks set to play his part for the Sky Blues going forward.
