Coventry City could strengthen their squad following promotion with the signing of Abdul Fatawu from rivals Leicester City.

Coventry City are back in the Premier League, with Frank Lampard now looking to improve his squad as they try to compete with the elite in this country after ending the club's 25-year top-flight absence.

The Sky Blues enjoyed a superb season as they won the Championship title, but the boss will know that major investment, and some ruthless player decisions, are required if Coventry are to stay up next season.

Of course, there are some players in the squad that will be capable of handling the step up, and Lampard will also want to give individuals a chance to prove themselves as part of the setup.

However, it’s clear upgrades are required in certain areas, and bringing in a winger down the right flank to compete with Tatsuhiro Sakamoto is sure to be among the priorities.

Abdul Fatawu would be a smart signing for Coventry City

The Japanese international has been an excellent signing for Coventry, and he will no doubt feature regularly for Lampard next season.

Yet, there is a lack of depth in that position behind Sakamoto, so scouts at the Midlands club will be lining up players to add more quality in the final third.

And, they won’t have to look far for someone who could represent an upgrade, with Leicester City’s Abdul Fatawu almost certain to leave the Foxes this summer.

Of course, there is a rivalry between the two clubs, so normally this is a transfer that may be difficult to do, but the contrasting situations between Coventry and Leicester right now means a transfer may actually suit both parties.

Firstly, as mentioned, Fatawu is a player that could improve Coventry’s squad, and their financial power following promotion should ensure they are ready to act swiftly.

Meanwhile, Leicester’s relegation to League One is going to bring plenty of sales, and Fatawu is undoubtedly the prized asset. So if they could get him off the books for a decent fee early into the window, it may give them some breathing space as they adjust to their new reality.

Coventry could potentially take advantage of Leicester’s struggles to also negotiate a knockdown price for the winger, and although they’re unlikely to get a free run at Fatawu, the chance to move to the CBS Arena will appeal.

Everton and Sunderland have also been linked with Fatawu, but the winger may recognise that he is more likely to get game time at Coventry, which is crucial for the 22-year-old as he continues his development.

Abdul Fatawu can add more pace and unpredictability to Coventry’s attack

Coventry will want to recruit players with Premier League experience, so the fact Fatawu has only played 11 top flight games isn’t ideal, but he does boast all the attributes you would want to compete.

In terms of physicality, which is increasingly important in the modern game, Fatawu can more than hold his own. He has genuine pace, which will be crucial to the way Coventry play, as they’re likely to be counter-attacking a lot of the time.

As well as that, Fatawu is strong, he can handle coming up against tougher defenders, and his technical ability is clear to see.

Obviously, there are areas of his game that he can improve, but that’s going to come with age and experience.

Fatawu’s left foot is fantastic, and whoever is leading the line for Coventry will appreciate having someone with that talent providing service from out wide.

Even with Leicester’s struggles, the ex-Sporting CP man still managed nine goals and seven assists, which is the same number of goal contributions as Ephron Mason-Clark, which says a lot.

An advantage of Coventry’s relatively early promotion means they will have been able to accelerate plans to strengthen the squad, and a host of new signings will arrive.

If they did manage to sign Fatawu, it would create a lot of headlines as he would join from Leicester, but it could be just the sort of addition Coventry need if they are to survive in the Premier League.
