Crazy Arne Slot belief ends brilliant Liverpool deal

Liverpool's crazy belief in Arne Slot has ended their chances at a brilliant deal. The pressure is only increasing.

Liverpool continue to stick with Arne Slot, even in the face of mounting pressure. The Reds view the Dutchman as the best-possible man for the head coach role and will back him.

That means abandoning the opportunity to strike a major deal - one for Xabi Alonso. Alonso will instead take over at Chelsea, with the Spaniard set to take on quite a lot of power at the club.

Liverpool were never going to hand over similar power, especially when they believe Slot is actually the better fit. That's according to the Athletic, who report that as the case.

The report states that Liverpool felt back in 2024 that Slot was the better fit for them when it came to playing style and formation. It's a belief that still holds - but at this stage, it's a crazy one.

Liverpool's playing style has consistently gone backwards over the last 18 months and it now resembles nothing of Jurgen Klopp's team. Similarly, the formation factor hasn't really come into it, given the mass turnover of playing staff.

The Reds spent so much money last summer - and moved so many players on - that they could have switched to any formation they wanted. The same can be said about this summer, too, as Liverpool are set to sign quite a few players.

Slot has voiced that himself, stating people are 'underestimating' the effect of a transfer window. It throws the belief that Slot is a 'better fit' into question, given there doesn't seem to be any great desire to 'fit' him into anything - Liverpool are instead adapting away from where they were.

And if that's the case, what exactly made Slot the better option? Things have quite plainly got in the wrong direction this season and the faith in him to turn it around seems to be almost blind.

Arne Slot: Situation Summary

Liverpool Pressure and Dressing Room Unrest

As of 19 May 2026, Arne Slot is facing the most critical period of his Anfield tenure. Following a heavy 4–2 defeat at Aston Villa, the squad is reportedly in revolt after departing legend Mohamed Salah posted a bombshell social media critique aimed at Slot's tactical departures from the club's traditional style. The post was pointedly "liked" by several senior players, signalling a severe drop in squad faith.

Future and Sack Speculation

While Slot publicly maintained he expects to be in charge next season, a major internal shift is occurring. Fenway Sports Group (FSG) executives Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes are reportedly divided over his future. Reports indicate FSG is performing a U-turn on their previous stance to retain him, scheduling a crucial end-of-season review after Sunday's final match against Brentford. Luis Enrique has emerged as the bookmakers' early favourite to succeed him.
