Tottenham centre-back and World Cup winner Cristian Romero has refused to commit his future to the club, whilst links for a move to Atletico Madrid remain rife.
The Argentinian is the club’s vice-captain and still has two years left on his contract, but has cast doubts over whether he will see it out.
Speaking to an Argentinian journalist, Romero said: “I’d love to play La Liga. I’d love to, honestly. It depends on a lot of things. We’ll see after the [English] championship is over. The truth is, I haven’t spoken to my agent yet, but I’m open to anything. My goal is always to grow and go to new places to continue developing.”
The comments have sparked outrage amongst Spurs fans. The club are still in a fight to win the Europa League, now in the semi-final with Bodø/Glimt yet to come, and are coming towards the end of a disastrous domestic campaign which could see them finishing 16th.
Romero has missed 27 games this term due to injury, and to come out with these comments at the crunch stage of the season seems slightly odd.
He did later say in the interview: “Above all else, I try to take one day at a time. There are two months left until the end of the season and I’m always thinking about performing at my best. We’re in the Europa League semi-finals. It’s an important step for the club which hasn’t reached this stage for so many years. I’d like to win it.”
Romero has suffered with several different issues this campaign, namely hamstring, toe and ankle injuries.
He has now been fit for almost six weeks and will be hoping he has put any ailments behind him for the time being.
Spurs next face Liverpool in the league and will be hoping to end a horrible run of domestic form which has seen them win one league game since the 23rd of February.
