Cristian Romero suffered a left knee problem and was forced off as Argentina beat Austria 2-0 at the World Cup on Monday.
According to L'Équipe, the centre-back will undergo tests on Tuesday or Wednesday. After the match, Lionel Scaloni said they hope it is nothing, stressing his importance.
Romero was replaced shortly before the hour by Nicolas Otamendi after feeling pain in the same joint.
It is the knee he damaged in mid-April, a partial tear of the medial collateral ligament, which had threatened his World Cup participation.
The Tottenham defender missed around a month and a half, returned in early June with two substitute outings for Argentina of 27 minutes then 45 minutes.
Scaloni then started him against Algeria, a 3-0 win in which he played 80 minutes, and again from the start against Austria.
