Cristóvão Borges cherishes Vasco and Corinthians, says he bears no grudges over short Corinthians spell | OneFootball

Cristóvão Borges is resuming his coaching career at Tombense after two years out, with former clubs Vasco and Corinthians set to contest the Copa do Brasil final at the Maracanã on Sunday.

According to Globo.com, he will pause early duties to watch the decider, praised Fernando Diniz and Dorival Júnior, and declined to pick a side, calling the final balanced.

His managerial breakthrough came at Vasco in 2011 after Ricardo Gomes suffered a stroke during a derby with Flamengo at Nilton Santos. As assistant he had already lifted the Copa do Brasil that year, then as head coach he led 78 matches, delivering a 60.2% win rate and finishing runners-up in the 2011 Brasileiro.

He recalls a strong team that fell short at key moments, including elimination by Corinthians in the 2012 Libertadores. He returned for a brief second spell in 2017 and also worked at Bahia, Flamengo, Fluminense and Athletico Paranaense, where he won the state title.

At Corinthians in 2016 he replaced Tite but lasted under three months, departing after a 2-0 home defeat to Palmeiras. His record was 18 games, seven wins, five draws and six defeats, amid exits of Elias and Bruno Henrique and the weight of succeeding a club idol. “Resentment? Never,” he said, adding the club was wonderful and that some things lie beyond a coach’s control.

Tombense have entrusted him with 2026, when they return to Serie D after relegation from Serie C. His side will compete in the Campeonato Mineiro, the Copa do Brasil and Serie D.
