Crystal Palace’s Daniel Munoz has revealed he asked Erling Haaland why he did not step up to take the penalty awarded to Manchester City in their FA Cup final last weekend.

Oliver Glasner’s side won their first major trophy as Eberechi Eze’s first-half strike clinched a hard-fought 1-0 win for the Eagles over a lacklustre Manchester City side at Wembley, which means Pep Guardiola’s side will finish trophy-less this season.

After a strong start to the final, Manchester City fell behind courtesy of a tactful counter attack by Palace that give them the all-important opener before Guardiola’s men grew back into the game and were awarded a penalty after Bernardo Silva was brought down by Tyrick Mitchell in the Crystal Palace box.

However, Erling Haaland – who is Manchester City’s usual penalty taker – passed the ball to January signing Omar Marmoush, who has been in fine form since his arrival from Eintracht Frankfurt, scoring a hat-trick in a 4-0 Premier League win over Newcastle in February.

Marmoush saw his penalty saved brilliantly by Dean Henderson, who was very lucky to have stayed on the pitch for the spot-kick after handling the ball away from Erling Haaland outside the Crystal Palace box, an offence that warranted a red card but was cleared by VAR.

In an interview with 10 Sports Colombia, which has been relayed by Sport Witness, Crystal Palace right-back Daniel Munoz has revealed details of a conversation with Haaland in the buildup to Marmoush taking the penalty on Saturday.

“I asked him (Haaland) why he didn’t take the penalty since he was the team’s top scorer,” Munoz said.

“And he (Haaland) told me that his teammate was also a good kicker. So, I told him, ‘If you don’t take the penalty, he (Marmoush) will miss’. And he missed.”

Manchester City went on to regret Marmoush’s penalty miss as they failed to slice open the Crystal Palace defence in the second half and despite a series of presentable chances, it was not City’s day as their season went from bad to worse with a cup final defeat.

However, qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League remains a key target and City took a crucial step towards the same with a convincing 3-1 beating of Bournemouth at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday, a game which marked an emotional farewell for the outgoing Kevin De Bruyne.
