Crystal Palace make it three wins in a row against Liverpool with a 3-0 at Anfield in the EFL Cup.

Two goals from Ismaila Sarr and one from Yeremy Pino made the difference as Palace eased past a very young and inexperienced Liverpool side that were without Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and many more.

Liverpool would finish the match with ten men after Amara Nallo was sent off in the 80th minute with the Reds already 2-0 down.

Liverpool vs Crystal Palace is a match that has dominated headlines for a number of reasons so far this season. The Eagles have won both meetings between the sides this season including the Community Shield final at Wembley which they won on penalties and most recently at Selhurst Park, where Eddie Nketiah’s 97th minute goal meant Liverpool would lose their first game in the Premier League this season.

Arne Slot made ten changes from the side that lost to Brentford 3-2 at the weekend including starts for teenager Rio Ngumoha and a first Liverpool start for Freddie Woodman in goal. Ngumoha started the game well taking the game to Palace early on. His most influential moment of the first 15 minutes was a curling effort from the edge of the area that flew just wide of the goal.

Despite the changes to the Reds’ starting 11, they did create chances. Federico Chiesa had the best of those in the first half an hour as he raced onto a ball over the top 24 minutes in. However, one-on-one with the keeper, the Italian fired well over the bar.

Palace’s more experienced 11 would eventually control proceedings and broke the deadlock through Sarr five minutes before the break. Daniel Munoz miscontrolled the ball in the box, allowing Joe Gomez to get to it, but the defender’s clearance was not good enough and gave Sarr the chance to rifle into the corner and give the Eagles the lead.

And in the 45th minute the winger would double Palace’s lead against last year’s runners up. Munoz was involved again as he slipped the Senegal international in behind the Liverpool defence and he placed home giving Liverpool a mountain to climb in the second half.

Palace did not take the pressure off the young Liverpool side after the break as they brought on Jean-Philippe Mateta. Sarr quickly had the first shot on target three minutes after the break looking for a hat-trick. Woodman was equal to the Senegal international’s long-range effort though.

And it would get worse for the reds who wend down to ten men ten minutes from time. Nallo brought down Justin Devenny who was racing through on goal with just the keeper to beat.

Pino made it three in the 87th minute with a beautiful finish into the bottom corner. The Spaniard drove into the box before passing the ball into the bottom corner.

Liverpool’s poor form continues after previous losses to Brentford, Manchester United and Palace in recent weeks. They will hope for a better result against Aston Villa on Sunday in the Premier League.
