Barcelona are working on a deal for Julian Alvarez, but he may not be the only member of Argentina’s 2026 World Cup squad to move to Catalonia this summer. As well as a new striker, the Catalans are open to bringing in a central defender with experience, and that is where Cristian Romero could come into the equation.
Romero is a player that Barcelona have appreciated for a number of years, but until now, there has never been a realistic chance of signing him. That changes in 2026, with Tottenham Hotspur having made the decision to sell the central defender this summer, as per Fabrizio Romano (via MD).
In recent weeks, it has been reported that Barcelona are ready to move for Romero if the door is opened by Spurs, and according to the aforementioned report, the 28-year-old would prioritise a move to Spain – in particular, the idea of playing at the Spotify Camp Nou is one that he greatly wishes for, although Atletico Madrid hope to be the ones to win the race, as they seek to add to their strong Argentine contingent at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano.
There is no doubt that Barcelona missed having a natural leader in their back-line last season, especially in the Champions League where they failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their matches. Romero would fill that void perfectly, and his playstyle is one that would suit Spanish football more than the Premier League, where he has been.
However, Spurs would want big money for Romero, and given that Barcelona are already going to go large to sign Alvarez, they may not have the funds at their disposal to be able to match the asking price that is still to be set by the Premier League side.
