Alan Nixon reports Rangers are set to open talks with Sunderland midfielder and former captain Dan Neil, who must decide his next move with his deal up this summer.
A switch to Ibrox could appeal, with Danny Rohl’s side offering European football and a chance to contest major honours against Celtic and Hearts.
Neil effectively ended his time at his boyhood club in January by joining Ipswich Town on loan for the rest of the season. He made 17 appearances as Kieran McKenna’s side finished runners-up, earning promotion and securing his second successive rise to the Premier League.
In a farewell message, he thanked coaches, team-mates, staff and supporters, said he was proud to help take Sunderland back to the Premier League, and described captaining the club as a boyhood dream. He added that, as a lifelong fan, he is excited for what comes next on the club’s journey.
A permanent move to Portman Road is not expected this summer as his Sunderland contract expires, while Coventry City are believed to hold an interest as they prepare for the Premier League after winning the Championship.
