Rangers have agreed a deal to sign free agent Dan Neil, who is set to join the Ibrox club, according to Sky Sports.
The Glasgow side moved quickly over the last 48 hours after the 24-year-old held talks with Southampton last week and had looked poised for St Mary’s.
Neil became a free agent when his Sunderland contract expired this summer. He has undergone a medical in the past 24 hours and confirmation is expected soon.
A Sunderland academy graduate, he grew into a key figure during the club’s climb back through the divisions. He helped win promotion from League One in 2022, then aided their Premier League return.
Neil captained Sunderland in the club’s Championship play-off final win over Sheffield United at Wembley, underlining his influence during the Black Cats’ rebuild.
Southampton were well placed last week, but Rangers now appear to have won the race. They have also signed goalkeeper Ivor Pandur from Hull City for £six million earlier this week.
