Dani Olmo has accused Roberto Fabián Ayala of lying and says he does not need an apology, responding after the Argentine said he would say sorry following the World Cup final between Argentina and Spain.

"Someone who claims to be sorry but justifies a punch by saying it was a response to 'some words' probably is not sorry," he told Diari de Terrassa.

"He is not telling the truth because I did not say anything, so I do not need him to apologise." Olmo added: "What truly defines us is not the mistake, but the courage to own it."

The former Valencia defender, now on Lionel Scaloni's Argentina staff, had earlier offered his version. "My intention was to go in, separate and nothing more. It was a reaction to some words, but that is no excuse. My behaviour has to be different," he said on Valencia Capital Radio.

"If I see Dani Olmo I will apologise to him. Obviously I am sorry. I cannot allow a feeling to change my mood, but for me these are things that stay on the pitch."
