Chelsea have completed the signing of Danny Welbeck from Brighton & Hove Albion on a two-year contract for an undisclosed fee. The veteran forward had one year remaining on his deal but Brighton sanctioned the move. He is set to travel to Hong Kong to link up with the squad on the west London club’s pre-season tour.

He is Chelsea’s sixth addition of the summer, following Morgan Rogers, Maxence Lacroix, Geovany Quenda, Marco Palestra and Emmanuel Emegha. The Athletic reported on 27 July that Chelsea were exploring a move for Welbeck, with his leadership and striking attributes appealing to new manager Xabi Alonso.

Welbeck said joining a club of Chelsea’s stature felt exciting, adding that he already felt a strong connection with the manager and had fire in his belly.

He hit a career-high 13 Premier League goals last season as Brighton finished eighth to reach the Conference League. Since arriving from Watford in 2020 he has 51 goals and 18 assists in 201 appearances. Across spells with Manchester United, Sunderland, Arsenal, Watford and Brighton, he has played 400 Premier League games and scored 90 goals.

Chelsea have shifted towards experience this window. They are working on a deal to sign Jordan Henderson, 35, after his release from Brentford, having tried for Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka, 33, in early July and shown interest in John Stones, 32, following his Manchester City exit as a free agent. Stones has since joined Inter.
