Darwin Núñez is set to leave Al Hilal after an underwhelming year in Saudi Arabia, with Saudi media reporting he will terminate his contract and become a free agent.

The former Benfica striker, signed from Liverpool for €53 million last summer, endured a difficult spell in Riyadh and is said to have agreed an exit with the club.

Following the arrival of Karim Benzema, the 26-year-old was not registered for the Saudi League from January, which further cut his minutes. Earlier in the campaign he had already lost ground due to fitness problems.

At this stage of his career he wants to compete at the highest level again. His priority is now a return to Europe, where he believes he can regain prominence.

This season for Al Hilal, Darwin Núñez, valued at €25 million, made 24 appearances, 16 in the Saudi League, six in the AFC Champions League and two in the Saudi Cup. Across 1,667 minutes he produced nine goals and five assists.
