With Liverpool performing at the top of their game under new manager Arne Slot, recent challenges faced by rivals Manchester City and Arsenal have opened a unique window of opportunity. David Lynch, speaking to Dave Davis on the Anfield Index podcast, provided insight into how Liverpool could leverage these rivals’ dips in form to strengthen their own title push. Lynch’s comments underscored that while Liverpool’s season has started on a strong note, maintaining momentum while their competitors falter could be crucial.
Manchester City’s recent struggles, particularly on the defensive front, were a central focus of Lynch’s analysis. Lynch remarked, “Seeing City lose three in a row is rare. It’s not something you expect from them, and Liverpool should be paying close attention.” City’s issues are compounded by their traditional reliance on possession-heavy play, but teams have increasingly found ways to counter this approach. As Lynch pointed out, “Sporting [Lisbon] beat them with 27% possession – this shows that City are not the impenetrable force we’ve known in past seasons.”
The wear and tear on City’s core midfield and defensive players is becoming more apparent, with their key players like Rodri showing signs of strain. Lynch noted, “Their midfield profile is aging, and we’ve seen this story before – you can suddenly hit that cliff.” Liverpool, meanwhile, are in the unique position of having depth in their forward line and a fresh approach under Slot, potentially allowing them to exploit City’s current vulnerabilities.
Arsenal, another title hopeful, has shown signs of slowing down, especially in their attacking play. Lynch highlighted Arsenal’s over-reliance on wide play, remarking, “I watched Arsenal slinging in crosses over and over without real threat – they looked short of ideas.” While Arsenal have shown fluidity in recent seasons, they now appear to be struggling against organised defences, with their creativity stifled by tighter marking and reliance on set pieces.

Liverpool, in contrast, have maintained versatility in their approach under Slot. With a strong front three and increasing midfield cohesion, they could capitalise on Arsenal’s attacking limitations. Lynch observed, “Liverpool’s ability to adapt to different in-game situations could give them the upper hand over an Arsenal side that looks a bit one-dimensional at the moment.”
With City and Arsenal slipping, Lynch argued that Liverpool must seize the chance to build a lead in the standings. “Every point matters more when your rivals are faltering,” he noted, suggesting that Liverpool’s consistency will be their biggest weapon this season. He went on to explain, “City and Arsenal may have a wobble here and there, but Liverpool have to capitalise on this to keep building a points gap.”
As Lynch highlighted, the Premier League’s demanding nature means that even minor setbacks can shift title dynamics. City and Arsenal’s recent stumbles offer Liverpool a golden opportunity to accumulate points without immediate pressure from the usual title rivals. However, Lynch cautioned that Liverpool’s advantage will only hold if they remain vigilant and avoid dropping points themselves: “It’s not about waiting for City and Arsenal to recover; Liverpool need to put up points while they can.”
Under Slot, Liverpool’s tactical evolution has introduced a new dimension to their play. Slot’s approach has not only revitalised Liverpool’s squad but has also created a style suited to both possession-based play and counter-attacking tactics. Lynch commented, “Slot’s system allows Liverpool flexibility, giving them the tools to adapt to both high-intensity matches and more controlled situations.”
City’s recent lack of control and Arsenal’s struggles to break down defensive walls suggest Liverpool’s tactical depth may be more suited to the current demands of the Premier League. Lynch emphasised the need for a “long-term vision that allows Liverpool to play to their strengths while adapting to the shifting strategies of rivals.”
Liverpool’s success this season, as Lynch outlined, may well depend on their ability to maintain consistency as other teams falter. Lynch concluded, “City and Arsenal’s struggles give Liverpool the breathing room they need, but only if they keep pushing and avoid complacency.” Slot’s influence on Liverpool’s squad depth and rotation strategy could enable the team to stay fresh and competitive across competitions, which will be crucial in the season’s second half.
As Liverpool continue to build under Slot, capitalising on the dips in form seen in their rivals may make all the difference in a title race that looks more open than expected.
