Manchester United are pursuing a move in the summer for Sporting Lisbon attacker Geovany Quenda, David Ornstein of The Athletic has confirmed.
Earlier today, a report from Portugal claimed that United have agreed a €60m deal to sign Quenda in the summer.
It was stated that the transfer is “assured” to go through and Quenda will seal a switch to Old Trafford in a few month’s time.
Amorim is looking to recruit players who fit into his preferred 3-4-3 system and Quenda is deemed as the ideal player to slot into the right-wing-back role.
Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui have both been deployed at right-wing-back but neither have really thrived on that part of the pitch. Amad Diallo has shown the most promise there but it appears Amorim is more keen on using the Ivorian in an advanced midfield role.
Now, Ornstein has confirmed that United are indeed pursuing Quenda ahead of the summer transfer window but nothing has been agreed yet.
Ornstein also notes that the 17-year-old is valued at significantly lower than the €60m that was initially reported.
“Manchester United are exploring a deal to sign winger Geovany Quenda from Sporting CP in the summer.”
“No formal offer has been made but United are looking into a move for the 17-year-old Portugal youth international, who turns 18 in April and is expected to cost around €40million (£33.4m, $41.5m).”
“A switch would reunite Quenda with United head coach Ruben Amorim, the pair having worked together before the 40-year-old left Sporting for Old Trafford in November.”
It’s understood that at the moment, United are fully focused on business before deadline day on February 3 but transfer planning for the summer will begin soon.
United are back in action on Sunday when they host Crystal Palace at Old Trafford. Kick-off is at 14:00 GMT.
