Dayann Methalie talks advance, five-year framework in place but fee gap remains | OneFootball

Sunderland’s move for Dayann Methalie is progressing, though as of Wednesday morning there was still work to do. A five-year framework is in place, but no fee has been agreed with Toulouse.

Sunderland Echo understands Methalie favours Wearside if he leaves this summer amid wider European interest. There remains a belief in France that a deal could eventually be struck.

Toulouse want a package above Emersonn’s sale to Ipswich Town, around £24 million plus about £3.5 million in add-ons, and Sunderland have not met that valuation.

Methalie, 31 appearances last season and a France U21 call-up, impressed as a wing back with ball carrying, dribbles and touches in the box. He is a strong one-v-one defender and could play left back, with past minutes as a left-sided centre back.

Any move would carry risk given his limited senior experience, but he offers clear upside and depth after Dennis Cirkin’s exit. He would likely compete for starts.

A right winger is also sought, with Jocelin Ta Bi the only natural option and AS Roma’s Matías Soulé among the targets, though there has been no significant progress. Patience is expected as the club prioritises quality over quantity.

Another left-sided centre back is on the agenda to challenge Omar Alderete, with Luke O’Nien’s form easing urgency. Outgoings continue, and Arthur Masuaku, in his final year, has interest from the top flight in Türkiye, while his absence from the United States tour is notable as the World Cup contingent return.
