In 2022, four Flamengo players went to Qatar, Arrascaeta and Varela with Uruguay, Pedro and Everton Ribeiro with Brazil.

Pedro enjoyed his best season at Flamengo in 2022, yet started the World Cup as a Brazil substitute. He had limited minutes and featured in the quarter-finals defeat to Croatia, coming on in extra time and converting his kick in the shootout, but Brazil went out.

Everton Ribeiro took part in most of Brazil’s cycle under Tite. At the finals he played only once, 35 minutes in the group-stage defeat to Cameroon, and watched the quarter-finals exit from the bench.

Arrascaeta arrived after a physically demanding season. He began on the bench against South Korea and Portugal, then started the final group game against Ghana, scored both goals in a 2-0 win and was named man of the match. Uruguay were eliminated in the groups.

Varela started as a reserve, coming on late in the opener. He then started and played all 90 minutes against Portugal and Ghana, finishing as the Flamengo player with the most minutes at the tournament.
