Real Madrid continued their push in the La Liga title race with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Atletico Madrid.
While much of the attention was on the attacking brilliance, the defensive unit also played a key role, especially Dean Huijsen, who was handed a starting role in one of the most demanding fixtures of the season.
After the match, Huijsen spoke to RMTV, where he stressed the importance of the result, particularly in the context of the title race.
With Barcelona still ahead, every point matters, and the young defender made it clear that dropping points was not an option.
“It was a very important game for us. We knew that if we wanted to compete in La Liga, we had to win this match, and that’s exactly what we did.”
Looking ahead, Huijsen acknowledged the challenge that still lies in front of Real Madrid, especially with a crucial clash against Barcelona on the horizon.
“We still have the Barcelona match ahead of us. We know we’re four points behind and we have to try to close the gap. If we hadn’t won today, it would have been very difficult for us.”

One of the biggest talking points from the derby was the sending-off of Federico Valverde, a decision that sparked plenty of debate.
Huijsen did not shy away from sharing his opinion, clearly disagreeing with the referee’s call.
“I didn’t think it was a red card. I think he stopped the play, and it was a yellow card, nothing more. He didn’t kick him with his cleats or hit him very hard.
“It wasn’t an aggressive tackle; he just stopped the play, that’s all. Just like, for example, a grab—that’s a yellow card.”
Apart from the controversy, Huijsen also spoke about the team’s recent improvement, pointing to the changes within the squad and the ongoing process under Alvaro Arbeloa.
With tactical tweaks and a different approach, adaptation has been key. Addressing this evolution, he said,
“We’ve had a lot of changes: we’ve changed coaches, we have new players, and we want to play different systems.
“It’s normal; the adaptation we’re going through is going well, and we’re working on it every day. We’re really happy that it’s working out.”
Huijsen also opened up about the expectations placed on him by Arbeloa, admitting that the manager demands a high level of performance in all aspects of the game.
“We all know the level I’m capable of, and there have been times when I haven’t lived up to it. He demands a lot from me both with the ball and in defence, and that’s a good thing.”
A crucial part of Madrid’s defensive stability has been Huijsen’s growing partnership with Antonio Rudiger.

The chemistry between the two has become increasingly evident, something the young defender himself acknowledged.
“We have a great dynamic. We have that chemistry—it’s hard to explain, but when you have it, you have it. We play very well together.”
With Real Madrid now building momentum, the defender highlighted the importance of consistency, especially after stringing together multiple victories.
“We’re improving a lot, and hopefully things will keep getting better.”
He added context to the team’s progress by noting, “Every team needs a period of adjustment, and that’s been the case for us.”
Finally, Huijsen praised Vinicius Jr., who once again delivered in a big game with a decisive brace.
“A very good game. He’s motivated in every game. He works really hard too, and I’m very happy for him and for us, since we won,” he concluded.
