Eintracht slipped to a 2-0 defeat at Werder Bremen, with Oliver Burke and Romano Schmid scoring in each half for the hosts.
Head coach Dino Toppmöller made two changes to his line-up from last Saturday’s 1-0 win over VfB Stuttgart. Rasmus Kristensen was given a rest in favour of Nnamdi Collins at the back, while Ellyes Skhiri replaced the injured Ansgar Knauff in midfield.
Burke goal the difference
On a pleasant spring evening at the sold-out Weserstadion, the contest got off to a fairly quiet start. The hosts did have a couple of half-chances, Jens Stage heading over from a corner and Marco Friedl warming Kaua Santos’ gloves with a long-range effort, but the first big chance fell to Eintracht on 20 minutes. Hugo Ekitiké worked his way into penalty area after a one-two with Hugo Larsson and his shot took a slight deflection off Amos Pieper as it sailed just wide of the far post.
Werder looked the more threatening side, though, and after Romano Schmid’s volley was deflected onto the crossbar by the head of Stage, they broke the deadlock in the 28th minute. Oliver Burke was left completely unmarked at the far post from a corner and powered a header past Santos. The Eagles looked for a way back in the game after that but it remained 1-0 at half-time.
Schmid seals it
Toppmöller made an attacking substitution at the break, bringing on Michy Batshuayi for Tuta, but his side were lucky not to find themselves 2-0 down just two minutes after the restart. Nathaniel Brown inadvertently set up Marvin Ducksch with a back-pass but the Bremen striker chipped the ball wide of the target. Despite enjoying the majority of the possession, Eintracht continued to struggle to find openings, with Ekitiké unable to hit the target with a free-kick from a good position in the 59th minute.
More fresh legs were introduced for the Eagles in the form of Rasmus Kristensen and then Oscar Højlund and Farès Chaibi. Kristensen and Chaibi both curled efforts over, but any hopes of a fightback were ended in the 84th minute, when the ball ran through to Schmid just inside the area, and he had time to pick out the far corner with a curling shot. The hosts successfully ran down the clock after that to inflict an eighth Bundesliga defeat of the season on Frankfurt, whose attention now turns towards the UEFA Europa League quarter-final first leg at Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday.
